Refining Fire - Bethany House Book Review

Militine Scott and Abrianna Cunningham are two young ladies attending the Madison Bridal School in Seattle, Washington Territory in 1889. The friends are trying to come to terms with less than perfect childhoods while figuring out what the future holds in store for them.  Does the future include romance and marriage?  Faith and God?  Death and tragedy? This book, the second book in the Brides of Seattle series by Tracie Peterson, follows these two friends as they learn about themselves and God’s will for their lives in the often raucous frontier city of Seattle.

This book starts off slow - very slow.  I almost put it aside a couple of times, but the book was provided free of charge to me by the publisher, Bethany House,  and I had promised to read it and write an honest review, so I persevered.  The entire first half of the book, has no real conflict or plot. The book starts to go one direction, then the author takes it another direction.  The second half of the book, however, is much different. It's like the author finally figured out what she wanted the book to be about and with that firmly in mind, the plot really picked up, and the book became quite an exciting page-turner for a while.  It is typical "Christian Romance" fare, although the author has done a good bit of historical research which seems to be quite accurate, and that made the book interesting to me, since I knew very little about the early history of Seattle.

I gave the book three stars because of the very slow start.  To get four or five stars from me, an author has to catch my interest immediately, or at least by page 50. This book did not get really interesting until about the midway point, by which time other readers might well have given up with sheer boredom.  True to Bethany Houses’ reputation, this is solid Christian fiction, with nothing objectionable.  It deals with matters of God, faith and church in a positive and inspiriting way.
